SOMERVILLE, MA — The City of Somerville received a $75,000 state grant last week to develop a zoning plan for a stretch of Broadway, the administration of Gov. Charlie Baker and Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito announced.

The funding is part of the Housing Choice Grant Program, and Somerville was one of 36 projects to receive a total of $3.9 million in funds.

With the latest round of funding, $22.64 million has been awarded to 153 projects since the Housing Choice Grant Program began in 2018, the administration announced.

Baker and other political leaders held a press conference in Medway last Wednesday to celebrate this round of funding.

The Housing Choice Grant Program, according to a release from the Baker-Polito administration, funds planning and infrastructure projects that support housing or economic development. The program awards funds based on the project's nexus with housing, transportation, infrastructure, economic development, and community development.

"Municipal leaders understand how crucial thoughtful planning is for growing communities and changing needs, and today's awards will help them undertake a variety of planning and small infrastructure projects to set them up for long-term success," Baker said.

The Somerville project involves proposed mixed-use development on a half-mile stretch of Broadway between Ball Square and Magoun Square along the MBTA Green Line Extension.

The funding will be used for the adoption of a Zoning Vision Plan, which will allow Somerville and the City of Medford to address boundary issues that could affect the project.

Currently, parcels of land that are set for development are split between Somerville and Medford. With a new zoning plan, developers will no longer have to satisfy two sets of zoning regulations.
