MACON, Ga. - Two Bibb County schools will be returning to virtual learning following positive COVID-19 cases.

According to a media release, Southwest High School and the Elam Alexander campus at Southwest High School will transition to remote learning for Monday and Tuesday, November 16 and 17, 2020.

The campus of Elam Alexander Academy at Burke will not be impacted.

Stephanie Hartley with the Bibb County School System says the decision to transition to virtual learning follows notification of a positive COVID-19 case that impacts various areas throughout the building.

This transition to virtual learning was easy after a plan was already put in place at the beginning of the school year.

"We recognized the need to determine that should a circumstance, or public health data, dictate the need to go back to virtual learning, that we would be able to do that," said Keith Simmons, the Chief of Staff for Bibb County School District. "So, we began processing this and planning for this way back in August."

Normally, Wednesday for the district is already a day of full virtual learning to clean the schools. The schools plan to take this time to make sure that the coast is clear for students to return to the classroom.

"Being that the schools are vacated, or this particular school is vacated, we will take additional time to make sure that high traffic areas are thoroughly cleaned, disinfected, and sanitized, like we normally would," explained Simmons.

Students impacted will return to the building on Thursday, November 19 as Wednesdays remain virtual learning days.

Hartley adds students that attend Hutchings College and Career Academy, or dual enrollment programs, may continue to do so as long as they have not been identified as a close contact.
