Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi has purchased a five-story building in downtown Corpus Christi for $2.3 million, the university announced Friday.

Preliminary plans for the building, at 223 N. Chaparral St., include mixed-use space for “public facing University programs,” a news release said. The building may also be used for archive storage, and the rooftop terrace will be used to host events.

The 77,000-square-foot building was built in 1947 and has survived six hurricanes, a news release said. The university is identifying outside sources of funding to complete renovations.

“Downtown Corpus Christi is strategically important to the expansion of Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi’s footprint, as the institution has grown 41% over the past decade,” the release said. “The new building offers the University the ability to more easily connect and interact with people and businesses in the heart of downtown.”
