You can now use the PlantSnap App year-round at Thanksgiving Point.

Thanksgiving Point's Ashton Gardens, in partnership with the American Public Gardens Association, now have an agreement with PlantSnap App that allows garden visitors to learn about the plants, their taxonomy, habitat, and uses.

Sarah Allred, a horticulture coordinator at Ashton Gardens, said in a news release:

We want to create an environment of citizen scientists. PlantSnap is the most comprehensive and accurate plant identification app on the market. It will give our guests a whole new way to explore the natural world in everyday life.

PlantSnap currently using machine learning technology and artificial intelligence to help anyone, anywhere, identify any plant or tree on planet Earth.

By snapping photos, visitors contribute to national and international conservation efforts and help build more resilient gardens. PlantSnap’s open-source plant database features more than 600,000 plants and 150 million plant images. The app recognizes nearly all species encountered in public gardens and is available in 37 languages, according to a news release.

To join in this global citizen science project:

  • Visit the Ashton Gardens at Thanksgiving Point
  • Head to the App Store and search “PlantSnap”
  • Walk the gardens and snap photos to the database, interact with other photos from around the world.
  • Snap photos from home or elsewhere too!
  • Repeat as needed!

PlantSnap downloads generated by this partnership will be invested in the American Public Gardens Association's Garden-to-Garden Disaster Response Center, which supports member gardens recovering from extreme climate events, and also towards Association programs to help public gardens build resilience.
