U.S. Donors Gave $2.7B on GivingTuesday While Volunteering Rose 11 Percent Over 2020

GivingTuesday saw a rise in donations and volunteering this year, with $2.7 billion raised in the United States on the event's 10th year.

The charity donation campaign takes place every year on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving. Organizers told the Associated Press donations rose by 9 percent this year, beating 2020's record of almost $2.5 billion.

The GivingTuesday organization, which promotes the event, said volunteering levels also increased by 11 percent compared to last year. It added that 35 million Americans participated Tuesday, whether that be by giving or volunteering. Donations of food and other items also increased by 8 percent.

GivingTuesday was created in 2012 by 92nd Street Y and its Belfer Center for Innovation & Social Impact in New York City. America's Charities called it "a charitable answer to the Black Friday and Cyber Monday retail shopping days," encouraging people to give to charities instead of buying things for themselves.

It is an independent nonprofit that facilitates donations to organizations around the world. Social media has greatly helped with the campaign's popularity, with individual Facebook users being able to start their own fundraisers and public figures and organizations tweeting about their charitable efforts with the hashtag #GivingTuesday.

The movement is built on the concept of "radical generosity," which their website defines as "the concept that the suffering of others should be as intolerable as our own suffering." Their aim is to be a movement that "unleashes the power of radical generosity around the world."

Black Friday and Cyber Monday may have seen slight declines this year, but GivingTuesday generated a new record for giving.

"Giving is an important metric of civic participation, a way to build the kind of society we want to live in," Asha Curran, the CEO of the GivingTuesday organization, said in a statement. "Our hope is that this boost of generosity is an inspiration for continued giving, kindness, and recognition of our shared humanity each day of the year."

American donors gave nearly $2.5 billion in 2020 in the aftermath of the racial justice protests and amid growing needs brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Another $503 million was raised on GivingTuesdayNow, a special giving day held in May 2020 to raise funds for pandemic needs.

Donations made during the campaign have increased throughout the years, but it still represents a very small slice of overall giving in the U.S., which, in 2020, was estimated at $471 billion.
