ONSLOW COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A highway is open once again after troopers say a U.S. Mail tractor-trailer and a garbage truck crashed just outside of Richlands.

Authorities say the accident happened on Highway 258 and 24 near Walmart just before 5 a.m. Tuesday.

The Highway Patrol says Shane Stewart was stopped in the garbage truck when Miguel Payton rear-ended the truck while driving the U.S. Mail tractor-trailer. Payton has been charged with failure to reduce speed, according to state troopers.

Both drivers were taken to Naval Medical Center in critical condition. Stewart was later transferred to Vidant Medical Center while Payton is in stable condition at Naval.

Highway 258 was shut down for several hours but reopened my mid-morning.
