Update: Seven vehicles involved in crash on I-690 in Syracuse, one went off highway, police say
Syracuse, N.Y. — Seven vehicles were involved in a crash on Interstate 690 East that shut down two lanes of the highway in Syracuse Friday, police said.
One vehicle that crashed went over a fence along the highway and came to a stop near a building off of Canal Street. The crash happened between South Midler and Teall avenues.
A chain reaction of crashes went off after a vehicle’s hood popped open, leading the driver to pull over in a bad spot on the highway, Syracuse police spokesman Lt. Matthew Malinowski said. That led cars behind it to crash into each other, he said.
Seven vehicles were involved in the crash, Malinowski said. Some of the occupants were taken to the hospital, he said.
The vehicles collided around 4:06 p.m., according to Onondaga County 911 Center dispatches.
Police closed the highway’s center and left lanes for about an hour while crews got the damaged vehicles off.
