TAMPA — A new option in Tampa Bay allows people to get tested at home for coronavirus and guarantees results with 24 hours, if the patient is willing to pay $300.

Tampa-based Physician Partners of America announced Tuesday it will provide two COVID-19 test options in the area — one drive-thru and one at-home or in office.

The drive-thru option is open to the public and should be covered by insurance, said chief medical officer Dr. Abraham Rivera. Results are expected within three days.

The VIP option is offered at home or office, or at the Physician Partners of America office at 550 N. Reo Street in Tampa’s Cypress Point area. People who live within 20 miles of the office can get the at-home test, where an employee comes to them.

“Right now, there is a need in the community in Tampa Bay to provide Covid testing within a window of time,” Rivera said. “There is a demand for our VIP product, specifically travelers and business people.”

Those who don’t want to or are unable to pay $300 can get the standard drive-thru test. Both use a nasal swab. Rivera said he expects the 72-hour turnaround to be quicker than other options in the area, which have left some people waiting from five to 13 days for results.

People must pre-register at www.ppoalabtest.com. A representative will call back with a time slot. Testing capacity is about 600 to 700 per day, though Rivera said it can triple, if needed.
