WATCH: Chicago Mayor Lightfoot asks city for millions to deal with immigrants
Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot (D) is asking for $5 million to deal with the influx of immigrants who have come to the city because of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R).
The funds would be included in the city's FY 2023 budget.
"This is an unprecedented need that we have in our city," Lightfoot told the city council Monday. "The city government and our partners in the community are doing everything that we can to make real our role as a welcoming city, but once again, we need additional resources."

Lightfoot said she's also hoping the Biden administration will offer assistance for the sanctuary city to deal with the illegal immigrants.
"Our expectation is that because this is a national problem, the federal government will step up and do more, but we need to also make sure that we are doing our part and putting our money where our values are," she added.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott began busing those crossing the United States-Mexico border in September after he previously sent a number of buses to Washington, D.C. Lightfoot responded by calling Abbott 'racist' and 'unpatriotic' and also attacked his religion. She then traveled to Washington to meet with members of the Biden administration to discuss how to deal with the situation.
