PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Firefighters have put a two-alarm junkyard fire in Southwest Philadelphia under control, a fire that sent smoke spreading across Center City as the sun set across the city.

There were no initial reports of any injuries.

It started around 3 p.m. Tuesday near 61st Street and Lindbergh Boulevard, about a mile south of Bartram’s Garden, at a recycling plant.

About 100 firefighters went to the scene. They succeeded at getting the fire under control at about 5:30 p.m., though firefighters remained to extinguish hot spots.

The fire was visible from all over the city, from Center City to the airport.

The fire department was using boats from on the river to help get the fire under control.
