A white New Jersey professor is suing his school, accusing the college of paying less-qualified black colleagues more in salary.

Chemistry professor William T. Lavell, who has taught at Camden County College for 25 years, claimed he faces “embarrassment and humiliation” because of the pay discrepancy between him and black colleagues. Lavell said he earns a salary of $91,923 and holds three professional degrees in his area of certification.

Two engineering professors who work at the school, he said, make more money despite having fewer professional degrees. One of the professors, Lawrence Chatman, made $137,157 in 2020, while Melvin Roberts, another professor, currently earns $142,600, the lawsuit stated.

The nine-page lawsuit does not mention how Lavell’s pay compares to other professors in the chemistry department.

Lavell reportedly became aware of the discrepancy when he asked for the college salary records under New Jersey’s Open Public Records Act. He first asked the college for a bump in pay that would be equal to his black colleagues, only filing the lawsuit when the school declined his request.

The professor is apparently well liked by students at the school, garnering a rating of 4.8 out of 5 on the professor review site RateMyProfessors.com. Of the 43 students who offered reviews, 100% said they would take his class again.

“I took Prof Lavell for CHM 101 and he was absolutely the best teacher I've honestly ever had,” one review said. “I highly recommend him!!! I loved this man.”

Lavell is seeking back pay and benefits, as well as damages and legal fees, in the lawsuit.
