Seventy-eight migrants were discovered inside the same van Sunday as it drove through North Macedonia, police in the European country said.

Two men, including the driver, were arrested on suspicion of trafficking after mobile border patrol officials stopped the vehicle near Shtip, a town in the eastern region of the country, according to police.

Among those in the van were six minors, authorities said. Forty-one Pakistanis and 26 Afghans were in the vehicle, police said. Others inside included five Syrian migrants, as well as four Egyptians and two Turkish nationals.

Authorities believe they had come from Greece unlawfully.

The identities of the two men who were arrested have not been revealed publicly, other than that they are both Macedonian nationals. The driver is 46 years old, while the other man is 36.

Smugglers have been known to help people travel through the Balkan borders for a fee since the closure of a pathway known as the Balkan Route that led to thriving nations in northern Europe.
