Family dogs mauled a toddler and a baby to death at a Tennessee home, police have said.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office (SCSO) said the victims, a 2-year-old girl and a 5-month-old boy, were attacked inside a home on Sylvan Road at about 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, October 5.

Both children died at the scene after they succumbed to their injuries, the sheriff's office told Fox13.

The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) said more than 4.5 million people in the U.S. are bitten by dogs each year.

It added more than 800,000 receive medical attention for dog bites and that half of those bitten are children.

According to the AVMA, children are the most common victims of dog bites, which are more likely to be severe.

Fox13 reported the mother of the children was also attacked by the dogs and needed to be rushed to Regional One Hospital in a critical condition.

Police have since launched an investigation into the deaths. No further information about the dogs and the mother was released to the public as of Thursday morning.

Newsweek has contacted the SCSO for comment.

Earlier this week a woman was found mauled to death at a home in Liverpool, in northwestern England.

Police were alerted to reports of a dog attack at a property on St Brigid's Crescent in the Kirkdale district on Monday, October 3.

The 63-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene and her next of kind have been told about her death.

In September, a boy in Alabama was left seriously injured when he was mauled while out riding his bike.

The Lawrence County Sheriff's Office said five dogs attacked Gavin Peoples, 9, while he was riding a bike on Lawrence County Road 582.

Peoples was rushed to a Huntsville hospital where he was taken into surgery as soon as he arrived.

Police said Peoples had suffered wounds and severe lacerations to his leg and neck during the attack and that he was in a serious condition.

His mother Stephanie Overton praised the residents who helped and gave him first aid until he was taken to the hospital.

She said: "There's no telling what we would be doing today. Gavin actually told me the dog grabbed him by his back leg and pulled him off the bike and he went to hit the dog to try to get it off him."

That same month a 12-year-old girl in India died after she contracted rabies from a dog bite, according to officials.

The girl, known only as Abhirami, was bitten by a stray dog in August and died in a Kerela state hospital, according to the BBC.
