‘Jojo Rabbit’ director Taika Waititi puts coronavirus on notice: ‘We’re coming for you’

Oscar-winning filmmaker Taika Waititi has issued a stern warning to coronavirus as part of the New Zealand government’s response to the worldwide pandemic.

“We’re coming for you, corona,” intones Waititi, who directed “Jojo Rabbit,” in a social media video as New Zealand, his home country, officially shut down for a month to rid itself of the scourge.

Waititi’s short spot puts the deadly disease on notice and mixes an ominous, threatening tone with irreverence and insolence in the face of the encroaching pandemic.

“You might be coming for us, COVID,” he says, addressing COVID-19, the illness the virus causes. “But you better believe – we’re coming for you. So watch your back.”

Not to be confused with “washing,” he points out.

“We’re the ones washing our backs,” he says. “That’s what you’ve got us doing. We’re washing everything. We’re washing our backs, our hands, our heads, our ears — I’m so sick of washing stuff.”

He signs off with, “Mā tātau katoa e ārai atu te,” or, “Together we can slow the spread,” as translated by the New Zealand Herald.

New Zealand is mounting an “unprecedented” response, as the country logged 102 cases, including 36 new ones just since Sunday, the New Zealand Herald reported.

The country’s All of Government Controller, John Ombler, called the response "unprecedented" and said the private and public sectors were working together.

The lockdown begins at 11:59 local time Wednesday, Ombler said, meaning “everyone must stay at home unless they are working in essential services,” which means no socializing with people who don’t live in their households.

“Physical separation, but maintain social connection,” he said, according to The Herald.

That message was reinforced by a slew of other New Zealand celebs, in another public-service announcement courtesy of the government.

“New Zealand Unite!” Waititi tweeted. “Together we will put Covid-19 on its a--. Mauri ora.”
