Some battleground states that will determine the outcome of the presidential election are more likely to experience a militia threat around Nov. 3 than the rest of the country.

A recent report, co-authored by the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project and Atlanta-based Militia Watch, warned that Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Oregon are "at highest risk of increased militia activity in the election and post-election period."

The founder of the Militia Watch blog, Hampton Stall, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that militias' rhetoric has become “more aggravated, more energized” and increasingly focused on President Trump. Stall added that he isn't sure that they have actually grown in numbers during the coronavirus pandemic.

“It has become very normal for militias to show up at protests," he said. “That’s a really powerful effect of this summer.”

Of the states at the highest risk for militia activity, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin will play a vital role in determining whether Trump will get a second term in office through their 46 combined Electoral College votes. Former Vice President Joe Biden is currently leading in Michigan by 7.8%, according to RealClearPolitics'. Biden also leads by 5.1% and 4.6% in Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, respectively.

More than a dozen members of a militia were arrested earlier this month after they planned to kidnap Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.

Several militias have countered Black Lives Matter protesters following the death of George Floyd. Floyd, an unarmed black man, died in May after a police officer pinned him down by the neck for nearly nine minutes. His death inspired protests around the country, and the world, against police brutality and racial inequality.
