Jupiter Now Has More Moons , Than Any Other Planet. NBC News reports that 12 new moons have been discovered around Jupiter. The new discovery puts the planet's moon count at 92. Saturn is a close second with 83 moons. The new Jupiter moons were detected in 2021 and 2022 with telescopes in Hawaii and Chile. They range from 0.6 miles to 2 miles in size. I hope we can image one of these outer moons close-up in the near future to better determine their origins, Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institution, via statement. NBC News reports that Jupiter and Saturn's small moons are likely fragments of bigger moons that used to exist. The European Space Agency will send a spacecraft to Jupiter in April to study the planet and its moons. NASA's Europa Clipper will launch next year to explore one of the planet's moons as well.
