King Charles's cousin - Prince Philip's nephew - dies at the age of 89

Maximilian, Margrave of Baden – first cousin of the King – has died at the age of 89.

The royal, who was nephew of the late Prince Philip, died in the early hours of this morning.

He had been residing at Salem Castle, the House of Baden confirmed on their official website.

An official statement reads: ‘Max Margrave of Baden died in the early morning hours of December 29, 2022 in Salem Castle.

‘Since 1963, Max Margrave of Baden was the head of the house at the head of the formerly ruling Grand Ducal Baden Princely House, which ruled from 1112 to 1918 in the Baden part of today’s federal state Baden-Württemberg provided the sovereigns.

‘His successor as head of the House of Baden is Bernhard Margrave of Baden, the previous hereditary prince.’

Two funerals are planned following Maximilian’s death.

The royal, known as Max Markgraf von Baden in German, married Valerie Isabella Habsburg-Lothringen in 1966.

Through his mother, Princess Theodora of Greece and Denmark, the second sister of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, he was a first cousin of King Charles III.
