San Antonio Animal Care Services seizes more than 50 dogs, cats and exotic birds

Animal Care Services served an animal cruelty warrant Wednesday morning to seize more than 50 animals including dogs, cats, chickens and birds, including a peacock in brilliant plumage, at a home on the West Side.

Across the street in the 200 block of Pendelton, neighbor Deborah Rodriguez said everyone on the streets knew about the woman, whose name has not been released, and her menagerie.

“The animals are like her family,” said Rodriguez, 47.

ACS spokeswoman said they received a call that the older resident who lives at the one-story home on Pendleton, just west of Interstate 35 near South Brazos, had been collecting an assortment of stray dogs, cats and exotic birds for some time.

Norwood said the woman was cooperating with ACS officers.

Investigators were seen carrying out plastic and wire kennels of all sizes, carrying a wide assortment of animals. At one point, ACS Investigator Joseph Hernandez came out of the house holding a sturdy, somewhat bewildered-looking pup. Other officers led calm dogs out on leashes.

Chickens, ducks, parrots and at least one pheasant were seized.
