Demonstrators in Port St. Lucie gathered at two locations in the city Saturday to demand freedom for the people of Cuba.

Protesters held a rally on U.S. 1 just north of Prima Vista Boulevard from about 4 p.m. until about 8 p.m. Then, demonstrators gathered on both sides of the intersection of U.S. 1 and Walton Road until about 9:15 p.m.

“At this moment, our country needs us and that country will drown if we do not intervene. It will drown,” said Aleni Aleman, who lives in Port St. Lucie. “We just need to support them in any way that we can."

Liliam Vargas, who lives in Port St. Lucie, added, “The Cuban people want freedom, they want help. I’m destroyed in my heart. I can’t explain how bad I feel for my people."

Demonstrators said they're calling on the United States government to intervene in order to help the people of Cuba live in freedom.

"Joe Biden needs to help," said Nashley Garcia, who lives in Vero Beach. "Everyone needs to start helping."

Alejandro Perez, an organizer of the demonstration, added, "We’re fighting because we want America to know we need help, we need somebody to do something against the government. We want the tyranny out of Cuba right away."

Thirteen-year-old Kevin Gonzalez of Port St. Lucie was also at the protest.

"I wanted to bring awareness and make sure that our American government could see the pain and sadness for my country, Cuba, and gain awareness or at least try helping them get freedom for Cuba,” Gonzalez said.

Traffic was not blocked at any point during the demonstration.

Demonstrators said they will continue to rally and hold protests until there is change.
