June 2021 is an interesting month for Giovanni in Pokémon Go. All players will have a chance to encounter him this month, but for the first half of June, you’ll only be able to encounter him if you have not completed The Higher They Fly special research project. The shadow Pokémon during this time will be Zapdos, the Electric and Flying-type legendary bird from the Kanto region. Giovanni will have Zapdos until June 17. Once that rolls around, a second legendary Pokémon will be available, shadow Ho-Oh. This is the first time Giovanni has captured the legendary Ho-Oh, and players will be able to take part in the upcoming event through the Seven-Colored Shadow special research.

We can expect the change to happen on June 17 at 12 AM in your local time zone. Having shadow Ho-Oh in the spotlight is a fantastic surprise prepared by Niantic. Ho-Oh is already a powerful legendary Pokémon on its own, and by turning it into a shadow version, we can expect to see it even more in the PvP and PvE raid battles throughout Pokémon Go.

So far, we’ve seen Zapdos, Moltres, Articuno, Mewtwo, Entei, Raikou, and Suicune under Giovanni’s control for the past few months. While June 2021’s Seven-Colored Shadow special research project is not a brand new event for Giovanni, it’s still a good step for the mobile game as they slowly reintroduce much of the walking and social interaction Pokémon Go initially had during its launch, before COVID-19.
