Report: Jed York confirms 49ers seeking $120 million for Super Bowl, World Cup bid

49ers CEO Jed York is optimistic Santa Clara can host another Super Bowl in the near future.
York spoke to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco Tuesday at the annual NFL owners meetings in Arizona, confirming a report by The Athletic’s Daniel Kaplan that the organization will seek to borrow $120 million from the NFL’s stadium fund to upgrade the Levi’s Stadium.
Santa Clara reportedly is in the running for Super Bowl 60, which would be held on Feb. 8, 2026. York told Maiocco that he’s confident the Bay Area can lure the Super Bowl back after hosting Super Bowl 50 in 2016.
"My optimism is very high," York said. “We are not voting (Tuesday) at this meeting (for the Super Bowl), I think we’re voting at the May meetings for that. I feel fairly confident. I don't know for sure we're going to get Super Bowl 60, but I feel very confident we're going to get a Super Bowl in the near future. And it would be great to get Super Bowl LX after hosting Super Bowl L. It feels like Super Bowl L wasn't that long ago."
The venue is also scheduled to host World Cup games in 2026, so there’s a natural deadline to get some renovations done. According to The Athletic, the owners will vote on the stadium funding Tuesday, so we might know more about the $120 million in the near future.
Levi’s Stadium was completed in 2014, so it’s not even nine years old, but has fallen behind the times in terms of modern NFL stadium amenities. Even Jerry’s World in Dallas, which was built in 2009 with a similar $1.3 million price tag, seems like a more advanced stadium in 2023.
After Arizona hosted the Super Bowl in February, the NFL will take the game’s biggest showcase to Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas next year and the Superdome in New Orleans in 2025. The NFL is scheduled to reconvene from May 22-24 for their Spring League meeting, when we will find out the fate of Super Bowl 60.
“It would be fantastic to be able to bring that game, certainly after bringing the World Cup to Levi’s Stadium and having the Super Bowl to follow that. I think those are two of the truly largest sporting events in the world. Having those back-to-back would be fantastic.”
2026 could be a huge year for the Bay Area sports scene, as Levi’s Stadium could become the first venue to host the Super Bowl and World Cup in the same calendar year. Super Bowl 28 in 1994 was held at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, but the stadium didn’t host any World Cup matches.
