Alex Cora tells Jason Varitek to attend Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz’s Hall of Fame induction; ‘You’ve got to go’ logo 7/23/2022 Christopher Smith,

BOSTON — Red Sox game planning coordinator Jason Varitek will attend David Ortiz’s Hall of Fame induction in Cooperstown, N.Y., on Sunday.

Varitek was hesitant to take time off during a three-game series against the Blue Jays this weekend at Fenway Park. He is here with the Red Sox on Friday.

“He fought it a little bit but I was like, ‘Nah, bro. You’ve got to go,’” manager Alex Cora said. “Obviously he’s the captain. He means a lot to David and those teams that David played (on) here. Having Jason there, at least from my end, I’m good with that. Let Jason go, enjoy it and he can talk about it the next day.”

Varitek and Ortiz were teammates from 2003-11 here in Boston. Cora played with them from 2005-08.

“I’m jealous but I’ve got a job to do and he (Ortiz) understands,” Cora said.

Dustin Pedroia, Johnny Damon and Kevin Youkilis also are among Ortiz’s former teammates who Cora expects to attend the ceremony.

“It should be a fun weekend,” Cora added. “The big man, he’s special.”
