MLB rumors: Best available starting pitchers on trade market for Yankees, Mets | Analysis logo 7/29/2021 Mike Rosenstein,

Brian Cashman isn’t done shopping.

One day after trading for Texas Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo, MLB Network’s Jon Heyman reports the New York Yankees are remaining active as Friday’s deadline approaches. Specifically, Heyman said the Yankees are looking for starting pitching. Problem is, so is just about every other contender.

That includes the New York Mets, who are dealing with injuries to Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Carlos Carrasco.

Here’s a quick rundown of the best starters available on the trade market:

- Jose Berrios, Minnesota Twins

- Zach Davies, Chicago Cubs

- Jon Gray, Colorado Rockies

- Kyle Gibson, Rangers

- Merrill Kelly, Arizona Diamondbacks

- German Marquez, Rockies

- Michael Pineda, Twins

- Max Scherzer, Washington Nationals

Obviously Scherzer is the best of the bunch. But the 37-year-old right-hander, a three-time Cy Young Award winner, can veto any trade as a 10/5 player and has reportedly ruled out agreeing to a deal with the Yankees or Mets.

That leaves Gibson as perhaps the best pitcher available. The 33-year-old right-hander is third in the American League with a 2.87 ERA.

But one would think if the Yankees were going to deal for Gibson, they would’ve done it at the same time they acquired Gallo.

That brings us to the 27-year-old Berrios, who’s eighth in the American League with a 3.48 ERA. He’s a two-time All-Star (2018 and 2019) who’s pitched all six of his MLB seasons in Minnesota. This year he is 7-5 with a 3.48 ERA in 20 starts. According to Spotrac, Berrios is making $6.1 million this season and has one more year of arbitration eligibility remaining.
