‘A classic match’: Daniel outlasts Brookland-Cayce, storms to capture SC soccer title

Moments after Friday’s epic Class 3A boys soccer championship match, Brookland-Cayce coach Matthew Drapeau gathered his team at midfield and reminded players of their accomplishments the past two seasons.

Brookland-Cayce won a state championship last year but lost to Daniel after penalty kicks this time around. The match lasted more than four hours and endured a weather delay at Irmo High School.

The match went into penalty kicks tied at 3. Daniel won the PK round 3-1.

“I told them to keep their heads up,” Drapeau said. “When we went into the (weather delay), I told them they were in a classic match. It was one of the best state championships they had. Yeah it hurts to lose, but someone has to do it every game. At the end of the day, what a game to be a part of. The memories you make are what it is all about.”

After the speech, Drapeau went and consoled B-C senior star Eduardo Moisa Membreno, the team’s catalyst over the past two seasons and who helped lead the Bearcats’ comeback in the title match.

Down 3-1 in penalty kicks, Moisa Membereno looked to extend the match, but Daniel goalkeeper Coleman Wright made the stop to give the Lions their fifth state championship and first since 2003.

“What I told him is I love him,” Drapeau said. “I know losing sucks, but everything he has done for the program. … We wouldn’t be here without him. Just like when we win and he says it is not about me. It is the same when we lose, it isn’t just you. It is everybody. But we love him and are extremely proud of him, and he has a bright future in the game.”

Wright was huge in overtime and during penalty kicks for the Lions. He had a big save in the first five-minute sudden death period. In penalty kicks, he stopped B-C’s first two attempts as the Lions took a 2-0 lead.

Tyler Brown put Daniel up 3-1 before Wright’s final save.

“It’s just being confident and trusting my ability,” Wright said. “I made some mistakes earlier in the game, but I was still confident that I could come up big. That’s the mentality a keeper has to have. You have to remain focused.”

Liam Disjardins and Eddie Merck also had goals in penalty kicks.

It was Daniel’s second state championship during the school year. The Lions also won their second straight Class 3A football championship.

Daniel lost to B-C 4-2 last season in the championship match.

Brookland-Cayce trailed 2-0 midway through the second half until B-C’s Moisa Membreno headed one in the 63rd minute to cut the lead to 2-1.

Moisa Membreno tied it in the 73rd minute with another goal that squirted past a Daniel defender and keeper to tie 2-2. He finished the season with 57 goals and 141 for his career in just over three seasons.

During this year’s playoffs, Moisa Membreno had 10 goals in B-C’s five postseason matches.

Two minutes later, B-C’s Angel Berrientos Reyes put the Bearcats up 3-2 when he hit one in off the back of his head in the 75th minute.

As the B-C fans and sideline started gearing up for a possible celebration, Merck slipped by the defense and tied things at 3-3 with two minutes left.

The match went into overtime but was delayed for 90 minutes because of lightning and rain with 3:30 left in the first 10-minute overtime.

Daniel scored twice in the first 13 minutes of the match. Ezra White scored the game’s first goal three minutes in to make it 1-0. Merk made it 2-0 with a goal at the 13th-minute mark.
