Port Neches-Groves is among the 31 Texas public high schools to use the nickname Indians for its sports teams.

In the wake of the Cleveland baseball team’s decision to drop Indians as its nickname, a look around the state of Texas shows 31 public and two private schools still use the nickname.

The state also has 28 with Warriors and 11 with other Native American-related nicknames.

In Houston, Lamar High School changed its nickname from Redskins to Texans in 2014.

Dallas public schools dropped their Native American mascots in the late 1990s.

In the NFL, Washington dropped Redskins as its name before the 2020 season.
