Gervonta Davis' next fight is officially set with the fast-rising star facing Rolando Romero on Dec. 5. The fight will take place at Staples Center in Los Angeles and will air on Showtime pay-per-view, the fighter announced on social media on Wednesday. Showtime has yet to confirm the bout. If it happens on Dec. 5, it will mark the third Showtime PPV to take place on a Sunday this calendar year.

There's a lot of bad blood heading into this fight, despite both being in the Mayweather Promotions stable. Romero has spent significant energy calling out Davis and claiming to be the bigger puncher of the pair and hurling insults on social media.

Davis has become a solid draw in the sport and followed up an October 2020 Knockout of the Year against Leo Santa Cruz with a TKO in an outstanding bout with 140-pound titleholder Mario Barrios in June. Davis is now 25-0 with 24 knockouts in his career. His biggest trouble has come outside the ring, with domestic violence allegations and a March 2022 trial scheduled for hit-and-run charges.

Romero's claims to be a bigger puncher than Davis still need to be backed up, but he has proven a solid knockout artist in his own right with 12 stoppages in his 14 career wins. Romero most recently stopped Anthony Yigit in an ugly fight that saw several fouls before Romero's power overwhelmed Yigit.

News and notes

  • Matchroom Boxing is now the official promoter for Teofimo Lopez vs. George Kambosos Jr. After Triller defaulted on their obligations following their latest attempt to change the date of the fight, the fighters split the $1.2 million Triller purse deposit. With Matchroom as the second-highest bidder behind Triller at the February purse bid, Matchroom took over responsibilities and the fight will now air on DAZN at a date and location still to be announced.
  • Former Lopez opponent Vasiliy Lomachenko has landed a date and location for his next bout, taking on Richard Commey on Dec. 11 from Madison Square Garden. After defeating Masayoshi Nakatani in July, Lomachenko had been angling for a rematch with Lopez, who defeated him for three lightweight titles in October 2020. As the Lopez vs. Kambosos saga dragged on, Lomachenko needed to look for an opponent and landed on former lightweight world champion Commey, who also lost his title to Lopez in a December 2019 fight. The fight will take place on ESPN following the Heisman Trophy ceremony.
  • Artur Beterbiev will defend his IBF and WBC light heavyweight championships against Marcus Browne on Dec. 17 in Montreal. Browne is the mandatory challenger for the WBC belt. The fight will stream on ESPN+ and is promoted by Top Rank after a WBC purse bid.
