Brittney Griner Lands Safely In The United States To Receive Medical Care And See Family
US Olympian and WNBA star Brittney Griner is finally safe back home in the United States. Griner landed in San Antonio, Texas, early on December 9, 2022.
US Special Presidential Envoy Roger Carstens tweeted, "So happy to have Brittney back on U.S. soil. Welcome home BG!"
Griner is a two-time Olympic gold medalist and a center for the Phoenix Mercury. She was traveling to Russia in February 2022 to play in the country during the WNBA off-season, something she had done regularly since 2014.Many WNBA players are compelled to play overseas in the off-season to make more money. In fact, in 2018 [*The Guardian* noted](https://fansided.com/2021/03/17/basketball-gender-equity-global-fight/) that 90 of the 144 women playing in the US league were in a similar spot.
It's unclear if Griner will play again in the WNBA, and no one appears to be putting pressure on her to do so.
For now, Griner is reportedly seeking medical care in Texas, where she and her family have also reconciled.
