Cleveland sports memorabilia: 6 baseball, football, basketball cards auctioned
CLEVELAND, Ohio – A recent SCP Auctions sale of sports memorabilia includes six Cleveland sports cards of former baseball players, LeBron James and Jim Brown.
Collectively, they sold for $5,647 via the California-based auction house.
Here’s a glimpse of the cards and what they sold for:
1909-11 T206 Sweet Caporal Napoleon Lajoie
The card shows Lajoie throwing while wearing a warmup sweater of the day. How good was the Hall of Famer, who spent 13 seasons playing for Cleveland? The team was known by the Naps for a reason. He hit .338 lifetime and had 3,243 hits in his career. The set is a holy grail among collectors.
Info – Lot: 34. Minimum bid: $300. Final price: $844.
1933 Goudey Willis Hudlin card
Hudlin went 158-156 in his career. He spent 15 years in a Cleveland uniform, living primarily on a fastball and sinker. He went on to a long career as a manager, coach, scout and even team owner.
Info – Lot: 53. Minimum bid: 500. Final price: $600.
2003 Topps Chrome Lebron James Cleveland Cavaliers rookie card
The kid from Akron is shown shooting a jumper with the words ‘Draft Pick #1″ below. The auction house has a neat back story on the owner of the card, a Canadian man who - as an ill youngster who could not play sports - began collecting rookie cards of great players in hockey, basketball and baseball.
Info – Lot: 506. Minimum bid: $750. Final price: $1,932.
2004 Bazooka Lebron James ‘03-’04 ‘Roy Rocks Cleveland’ card
A two-panel comic-strip card shows James as a young rookie visiting Cleveland.
Info – Lot: 508. Minimum bid: $100. Final price: No bidders.
Colorful lettering spells out “Jimmy Brown” in this second-year card of the great Cleveland Browns running back, who has a far-off, pondering look in his eye.
Info – Lot: 577. Minimum bid: $500. Final price: $1,556
2003 Bowman Chrome ‘R & S’ Lebron James card
The Rookies & Stars reflective card features an image of an ear-to-ear grinning James in his newly acquired Cleveland uniform.
Info – Lot: 892. Minimum bid: $250. Final price: $715.
