Friday night highlights: McKinney stuns Plano in final minute; SMU pledges enjoy huge games

GAME OF THE NIGHT

Cameron Rivas returned a kickoff 82 yards for a touchdown with 33 seconds left and R.J. Carver ran in the two-point conversion to give McKinney a 36-35 win over Plano. Plano, which trailed 21-0 late in the second quarter, took a 35-28 lead on Oliver Towns' 19-yard TD pass to Khamare Spivery with 57 seconds left.

PLAYERS OF THE DAY

— SMU pledge Montaye Dawson, a transfer from Mansfield Timberview, ran for 330 yards and four touchdowns on 14 carries as Fort Worth All Saints opened its season with a 70-50 win over Azle.

— SMU pledge Preston Stone threw for 451 yards on 32 of 41 passing, and he accounted for four TDs as defending TAPPS Division I state champion Parish Episcopal beat Bishop Lynch 43-7.

— Quarterback Braedyn Locke accounted for six touchdowns in Rockwall’s 59-40 win over Denton Braswell.

— Quarterback Collin Drake accounted for 265 yards and three touchdowns to lead Ennis — ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 5A Division II — to a 52-21 rout of Red Oak, the state’s ninth-ranked 5A Division I team. Drake threw a Hail Mary touchdown pass to Skylan Simmons on the final play of the first half to extend Ennis' lead to 31-0.

PLANO WEST’S TURNAROUND

After going 2-38 over the last four seasons, Plano West opened 2020 with a 28-0 win over Wylie, which was a playoff team last year. Tabren Yates rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns, and Plano West held Wylie to 153 yards of total offense.

ROCKWALL-HEATH’S SCORING SPREE

Josh Hoover threw for 332 yards and four touchdowns, and Zach Evans and Preston Landis combined to run for 210 yards and four TDs to lead No. 19 Rockwall-Heath to a 72-52 win over No. 17 Lewisville in a matchup of area-ranked 6A teams. Damien Martinez ran for 264 yards and five TDs for Lewisville.

LAST-MINUTE HEROICS

— Jake Strong threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to Jak Poe on fourth-and-goal with 21 seconds left to lift Justin Northwest to a 21-20 win over Frisco Memorial.

—- Solomon James' 14-yard TD pass to Connor Means with 32 seconds remaining gave Corsicana a 28-21 win against The Colony. That capped a 12-play, 80-yard game-winning drive.
