Webster Thomas senior Sean Smith tied for second in the weight throw Sunday, coming within 18 inches of breaking his own Section V record, at an indoor track meet in Geneva, Ohio.

The three-time Democrat and Chronicle All-Greater Rochester first-teamer threw the 25-pound weight 68 feet, 6 inches against a field of 15 at the Spire Scholastic Showcase in Geneva, Ohio. His Section V record is 69 feet, 11-3/4 inches set last season.

Other Section V competitors at the Spire meet included two-time AGR cross country Runner of the Year and Irondequoit junior Candace Tytler (16th of 21 in the 1,600 meters in 5:14.69); Penfield senior and two-time AGR in cross country Jonah Cuestas (17th of 28 in the 3,200 in 9:35.30) and McQuaid junior and AGR cross country first-teamer Jayson Chichelli (10th of 22 in the 1,600 in 4:29.07).

Hilton senior Laura Reigle set her school's girls pole vault record at 12 feet, 10 inches Saturday. This is the top reported height in the state this season. Reigle's jump came during a pole vault meet on a raised runway inside Hilton's gymnasium. She is also a three-time AGR first teamer.
