Syracuse.com logo Syracuse.com 6/9/2020 By Brenda Duncan, syracuse.com

Tens of thousands of high school students across Central New York will graduate shortly in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic that dramatically changed the second half of their senior year.

They had no in-person classes, no proms, no spring sports, and most will have no chance to walk across the stage at commencements.

To celebrate the Class of 2020, we are publishing lists of the graduates from more than 60 schools in the heart of New York state.

We also will report who is the valedictorian and salutatorian and give them a chance to share some thoughts about school, the pandemic, family and life. (This school’s valedictorian and salutatorian are below the list of graduates.)

Name: Alexis LaFever

My plans for the next few years: SUNY ESF for wildlife biology

My career plans: Wildlife biologist/research scientist for several years then be a professor.

The highlight of my senior year: Cross country practices and Spanish classes

The person who inspired me the most: My sister because she is intelligent and talented which pushes me to try to be the same.

What I do to unwind or relax: I love reading, running, crafting, biking, being outside, cooking. I have done cross country, indoor track, and track and field. I am also the President of National Honor Society, Vice President of the Class of 2020, and Vice President of Girls Athletic Association.

The word or phrase best that best describes my personality: Radiant and powerful

My advice to our graduating class: “Your focus determines your reality.” - Qui-Gon Jinn

The best part about social distancing: There is more time to read and do crafts. I can also be outside more during the day.

The biggest impact of the pandemic on my senior year: I missed out on many opportunities that were exclusively for seniors: the Spanish trip to Europe, the senior trip to Niagra Falls, Senior Dinner Dance, normal graduation... most of all, I miss my friends.

The one thing I hope to accomplish in my lifetime: I would like to complete a 100 mile ultramarathon. I would also love to hike to Machu Picchu.

My career plans: Become a high school Spanish teacher.

The highlight of my senior year: Field hockey senior night

The person who inspired me the most: My 4 favorite teachers: Mr.Jweid, Mrs. Palmer, Mr. McCarthy, and Mr.Pavone. They showed what a good teacher should be and they have inspired And supported me in so many aspects of my life. They are the reason I want to become a teacher.

What I do to unwind or relax: I am a 3 sport athlete and am planning to continue playing field hockey in college. I enjoy reading and writing posts for my blog.

The word or phrase best that best describes my personality: Goal-oriented

My advice to our graduating class: Always remember that you cannot control your situation you can only control your reaction.

The best part about social distancing: Having a lot of time to self reflect and work on myself.

The biggest impact of the pandemic on my senior year: I truly love school and it has been very difficult to be away from my favorite people every day. I was really looking forward to the exciting events at the end of the year and I am very sad that I cannot celebrate all the accomplishments we have achieved over the last 12 years with my classmates.

The one thing I hope to accomplish in my lifetime: I hope to become the best teacher I can and impact the lives of teens like my teachers impacted me.
