Muskegon-area basketball: Taylor Folkema now Western Michigan Christian’s all-time leader

MUSKEGON – Saturday games are a regularity in this high school basketball season and there was no shortage of intriguing storylines for Muskegon-area teams.

Here are the highlights for area girls and boys basketball from Feb. 20:

Taylor Folkema is now WMC’s all-time scoring leader

Taylor Folkema scored 22 points to vault her past Laura Karsten as Western Michigan Christian’s all-time leading scorer, as the Warriors earned a 50-44 road victory over Grandville Calvin Christian Saturday.

Folkema needed four points to pass Kasten, and now she sits on 1,030 career points. The 5-foot-11 senior filled the stat sheet with eight rebounds, four steals and four assists to power the unbeaten Warriors (5-0).

Kyla Wiersema finished with 19 points and nine rebounds for WMC, while also got 11 rebounds from Libby Mast.

Heidi Thomasma and Kilee Bradfield scored 11 points apiece to lead Calvin Christian (2-4), which trailed by 12 entering the fourth quarter.

“Calvin did a good job in the fourth quarter taking it to the basket and opening up their offense,” WMC coach Jeremy Goorman said. “I am proud of our girls for holding on and getting another win.”

Mona Shores girls top R-P, improve to 5-0

Mona Shores’ girls basketball team continued its strong start to the season with a 55-36 victory over visiting Reeths-Puffer Saturday afternoon in OK Green Conference action.

Olivia Sobczak scored a game-high 20 points for the Sailors, who improved to 5-0 overall and 5-0 in the OK Green. Bri Wade added nine points and Riley Rosenthal had eight for Mona Shores, which a 34-20 halftime lead.

“The Sailors did a good job defensively creating turnovers and converting them into easy baskets,” R-P coach Rodney Walker said. “They moved the ball very well and knocked down open shots.”

Arrionna Williams led the Rockets (1-1, 1-1 OK Green) with 12 points and three assists. Sophia Hekkema had eight points and seven rebounds, and Bella Borgeson added seven points.

Muskegon boys fall on road at Grand Blanc

Visiting Muskegon was outscored 35-19 over the middle two quarters en route to a 71-53 loss to a tough Grand Blanc squad on Saturday.

The Big Reds (4-2) led 13-11 after one quarter, but the Bobcats (4-1) outscored them 19-11 in the second quarter and 16-8 in the third to take control.

Kalil Stimage scored 14 points to lead Muskegon, while Jordan Briggs hit four 3-pointers en route to 12 points. Anthony Sydnor III and Ethan Hill had seven points apiece for the Big Reds, while David Day III added six.

R.J. Taylor scored a game-high 22 points for Grand Blanc, plus he had five assists and two steals. Ty Rodgers had 19 points, 15 rebounds and two assists, and Amont’e Allen-Johnson added 10 points, five rebounds, five assists and two steals.

Whitehall tops Mona Shores on last-second bucket

Shorthanded Whitehall didn’t have much left in the tank Saturday after playing less than 24 hours earlier, but the Vikings had enough.
