Top to bottom, it's tough to beat the quality of competition across the board in the Patriot League.

Winning a Patriot League title just got that much tougher.

The 11 teams that make up the Patriot League voted Tuesday morning to became an even dozen when Marshfield was officially added to the league on a permanent basis starting in the fall of 2020. Marshfield will continue to play an independent schedule for the upcoming winter and spring sports seasons.

"We're ecstatic to join a league as strong, both academically and educationally, as the Patriot League is. We're very happy they accepted our application to join the league," Marshfield's Interim Athletic Director William Battis said Thursday afternoon. "There are many ways that this union makes all the sense in the world for all the schools involved."

Marshfield has been on its own since the Atlantic Coast League disbanded after the spring of 2019 season. All the other teams in the ACL left for the Cape and Islands League, leaving the Rams alone to fend for themselves.

"The Patriot League has been a huge help to us as we navigated the creation of an independent schedule this fall," Battis said.

Marshfield will slot into the Keenan Division, making it an even six teams in both the Keenan and the Fisher Divisions. Schools will play the other teams in their division twice and the teams in the opposite division once, adding up to 16 games.

"With those 16 games set, scheduling everything becomes much, much easier," Battis said. "It's an amazing fit for us. All the member schools of the Patriot League are on the same page with us academically and athletically and it makes all the sense in the world logistically with our proximity to the other high schools."

The Keenan Division should be right there top to bottom with any public school league in the state, especially in boys and girls soccer as well as the boys hockey and baseball leagues.

Marshfield joins Silver Lake, Plymouth North, Hingham, Duxbury as well as Whitman-Hanson in the Keenan Division.

The Fisher Division, which is named in honor of Marshfield boys basketball head coach Bob Fisher, houses Plymouth South, Quincy, North Quincy, Hanover, Scituate and Pembroke.

Plymouth North Athletic Director Spanky DeManche said the addition of Marshfield makes what was a strong league even stronger.

"Marshfield is a quality athletic program. We're happy to add them to the league," DeManche said. "They've had a long history of success over the years and they make our league that much stronger."

Marshfield High Principal Robert Keuther said, "It is an honor to join the league and we look forward to participating alongside some of the most successful and well-respected athletic programs in the Commonwealth."

Marshfield Superintendent of Schools Jeffrey Granatino added, "We are so thankful to the leadership of the Patriot League for having faith in us. The Patriot League is a special group of schools who share many of the same values that we promote in Marshfield. It's a great match for us and we are excited about becoming a positive and productive member of the league."
