Pizza shop worker killed in hit-and-run crash while crossing road to make delivery logo 1/2/2020 By Joe Brandt,

A 72-year-old pizza delivery man died Friday after he was struck by two vehicles, including one that fled the scene of the crash, as he was making a delivery to a Pemberton Township apartment complex across the street from the pizzeria, police said Thursday.

Ronnie Zukowski, 72, was trying to cross Lakehurst Road to deliver food from Riccardo’s Pizza to the County Lakes apartment complex across the street, Pemberton Township police said.

A vehicle going eastbound struck Zukowski before 7 p.m. and fled, Lt. Brian Smith said.

Zukowski staggered in the roadway into the westbound lane, where he was struck by a car driven by a 62-year-old Jackson woman, who swerved unsuccessfully in an attempt to avoid him, police said.

Zukowski was pronounced dead at the scene.

Anyone with information or who witnessed the collision is asked to contact Pemberton Township police at 609-894-3308 or its confidential tip line at 609-894-3352.

Zukowski, a Navy veteran, was a standout athlete at Notre Dame High School in Lawrenceville, lettering in football, baseball and basketball. He is the only All-American to come from that school, according to his obituary published Thursday.

Zukowski went on to play defensive end for the University of Southern Carolina before working in electronics production and as a manufacturing manager. He is survived by a wife of 33 years and one son.
