Shark Week: 10 highlights to expect from this year’s event

Shark Week 2020 is swimming to screens starting Aug. 9, with more than 20 hours of shark programming provided by Discovery through Aug. 16.

From celebrity sightings to new, innovative shark research technology and insight on unique shark species, here are some highlights to expect from the 32nd annual event.

‘Tyson vs. Jaws: Rumble on the Reef’

Former professional boxer Mike Tyson competes with some of the ocean’s apex predators, including the blacktip reef shark.

Watch it: 9 p.m. Aug. 9 on Discovery

‘Abandoned Waters'

Amid the coronavirus pandemic, some great white sharks are returning to their natural behaviors thanks to a lack of human interaction. This gives shark researchers a chance to study great white sharks at Australia’s Neptune Islands.

Watch it: 8 p.m. Aug. 10 on Discovery

‘ShaqAttack’

After surviving a shark encounter in 2018 1/4 u2032s “Shaq Does Shark Week,” basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal is back — with the help of YouTube stars Dude Perfect and Mark Rober — to figure out what shark has the perfect predatory attack.

‘Will Smith: Off the Deep End’

Actor Will Smith dives into shark-infested waters to conquer his fears.

Watch it: 9 p.m. Aug. 11 on Discovery

‘Great White Serial Killer Extinction’

Witness “one of the most spectacular attacks in Shark Week history” as investigators in California deploy a dummy sea otter into waters inhabited by a supposed serial killing great white shark.

Watch it: 10 p.m. Aug. 11 on Discovery

‘Monsters Under the Bridge’

The Sunshine State makes an appearance during Shark Week with this program about supposed “monster sharks” — including a 15-foot, half-ton great hammerhead named Big Mo — that reside under the Seven Mile Bridge in the Florida Keys.

‘Sharkadelic Summer’

Rapper Snoop Dogg looks at shark encounters videos and talks to experts studying the invasion of great white sharks along U.S. shores.

Watch it: 9 p.m. Aug. 13 on Discovery

‘Tiger Shark King’

Dr. Austin Gallagher researches what could be an unknown species of mega-shark or cannibalistic tiger shark after a camera in the Caribbean catches a 14-foot tiger shark attack.

Watch it: 10 p.m. Aug. 14 on Discovery

‘Sharks Gone Wild 3’

Explore viral shark videos, the biggest news stories and the latest in shark science.

Watch it: 10 p.m. Aug. 15 on Discovery

‘Naked & Afraid of Sharks 2’

Five “Naked and Afraid” veterans — Matt Wright, Jeff Zausch, Alex Maynard and The Wild Twins (Serena and Amber Shine) — try to survive on a remote strip of islands on the edge of the Bermuda Triangle known as “Shark Alley.”
