LONDON 22, CARROLL 16

What this game means: London won its first game over a Class 5A opponent, overcoming two red zone turnovers on downs, an 85-yard kickoff return by Carroll in the fourth quarter and a last-second drive when Preston Cazalas intercepted Carroll quarterback Gabriel Garza inside the 10. The Tigers open the season with their 23rd consecutive setback.

Thursday's highlights: Cazalas was held to two catches for 24 yards and the game's opening score but his defensive impact was immeasurable as the sophomore outleapt a Carroll receiver to thwart the Tigers' last-second drive. The pick followed Tiger heroics, stopping the Pirates inches short of the line-to-gain on a fourth-down swing pass and an 85-yard kickoff return for Andre Sanders.

Thursday's stars: London quarterback Ty Leonard was a workhorse with 27 carries for 144 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, adding 119 yards and one score passing. Donyae Castaneda had 84 yards (65 rushing, 19 receiving) and helped move the chains in several key spots. Tigers signal caller Gabriel Garza threw for 164 yards and a score and ran for 54 more. Ben Sandoval hauled in six passes for 96 yards and a touchdown for Carroll.

London coach Robbie Moreno on surviving Carroll's late surge: "The kickoff return was huge. It gave them life. I'm real proud of that defensive stand because Ganado went 80 yards with a minute and a half left. It felt good to get a stop because they were on the verge of something like that. That big pick by Preston (Cazalas) was huge."
