The 65 Michigan middle schools with best results on 2019 PSAT

Magnet middle schools in the Warren and Dearborn school districts top the list of public  schools with the highest average scores on the 2019 PSAT reading test, according to data released last week by the Michigan Department of Education.

This is the first year that all Michigan public-school eighth-graders have taken the PSAT as their mandatory state assessment test in reading and math.

PSAT scoring runs from a low of 160 to a high of 760 in each subject.

Michigan's average score was 424 on the English language arts test and 416 on the math test,

Below is a list of the 65 public schools with an average PSAT reading score of 470 or above.

Because sociodemographics are the stronger predictor of student success, the percent of eighth-graders who qualify for subsidized lunch is listed for each school.

1. Warren Middle School Math Science Tech Center: 582

Middle School Mathematics Science Technology Center, in Warren Consolidated Schools, had 29 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 581.7, and more than 80% tested as proficient. The average math score was 534.1 and more than 80% tested as proficient in math

In 2018-19, 50% of the school's eighth-graders qualified for subsidized lunch.

2. Dearborn STEM Middle School: 542

Dearborn STEM Middle School, in Dearborn City School District, had 55 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 542.4, and more than 90% tested as proficient. The average math score was 536.2 and more 90% tested as proficient in math

In 2018-19, 48% of Dearborn STEM eighth-graders qualified for subsidized lunch.

3. Ann Arbor Open at Mack School: 526

Ann Arbor Open at Mack School, in Ann Arbor Public Schools, had 56 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 525.9, and more than 90% tested as proficient.  The average math score was 495 and 78.6% tested as proficient in math.

In 2018-19, 12% of Mack School eighth-graders qualified for subsidized lunch.

4. Northville Meads Mill Middle School: 522

Meads Mill Middle School, in Northville Public Schools, had 280 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 521.8, and 93.9% tested as proficient. The average math score was 509.2 and 82.5% tested as proficient in math.

In 2018-19, 6% of Meads Mill eighth-graders qualified for subsidized lunch.

5. Troy Boulan Park Middle School: 520

Boulan Park Middle School, in Troy School District, had 282 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 520.3, and 94.7% tested as proficient. The average math score was 548.9 and 88.7% tested as proficient in math.

In 2018-19, 8% of Boulan Park eighth-graders qualified for subsidized lunch.

6. Honey Creek Community School: 519

Honey Creek Community School, a Washtenaw County charter school, had 22 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 519.1, and more than 80% tested as proficient. The average math score was 475 and 63.6% tested as proficient in math.

In 2018-19, none of the Honey Creek eighth-graders qualified for subsidized lunch.

7. Achieve Charter Academy: 518

Achieve Charter Academy, a charter school in Canton, had 81 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 517.9, and more than 95% tested as proficient. The average math score was 519.3 and 84% tested as proficient in math.

In 2018-19, 13% of Achieve eighth-graders qualified for subsidized lunch.

8. Ann Arbor STEAM at Northside School: 514

Ann Arbor STEAM at Northside School, in Ann Arbor Public Schools, had 64 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 513.8, and more than 95% tested as proficient. The average math score was 486.1 and 70.3% tested as proficient in math.

In 2018-19, 13% of STEAM eighth-graders qualified for subsidized lunch.

9. South Arbor Charter Academy: 514

10. Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy: 513

Saginaw Arts and Sciences Academy, in Saginaw School District, had 83 eighth-graders who took the 2019 PSAT.

The average English language-arts score was 512.9, and more than 95% tested as proficient. The average math score was 517.5 and 90.4% tested as proficient in math.

11. Ann Arbor Clague Middle School: 510
