The 76 Michigan cities and townships with the most deer-vehicle accidents in 2018

More than 53,000 Michigan motorists collided with deer in 2018, and such crashes accounted for more than a quarter of crashes in October and November, according to Michigan State Police data.

Deer-vehicle crashes injured more than 1,300 people and killed 14 last year.

Below are the 76  Michigan cities and townships that had at least 85 deer-vehicle accidents last year, along with Google maps showing the locations of those crashes.

The maps come from the Michigan Traffic Crash Facts website maintained by University of Michigan.

Communities with most deer-related traffic accidents in 2018

Here is the list of the 76 communities with the most deer-vehicle crashes in 2018, based on Michigan State Police statistics.

1. Portage, Kalamazoo County: 184

The city of Portage, which is where I-94 intersects with U.S. 131, had 184 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 12% of all 1,554 vehicle accidents in the city.

2. Midland, Midland County: 180

The city of Midland, where the major road is U.S. Route 10, had 180 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 13% of all 1,335 vehicle accidents in the city.

3. Union Township, Isabella County: 180

Union Township, which is along U.S. 127 near Mount  Pleasant, had 180 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 33% of all 551 vehicle accidents in the township.

4. Bear Creek Township, Emmet County: 170

Bear Creek Township, which is along U.S. 31 near Petoskey, had 170 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 37% of all 461 vehicle accidents in the township.

5. Blackman Township, Jackson County: 161

Blackman Township, which is where I-94 intersects with U.S. 127, had 161 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 17% of all 947 vehicle accidents in the township.

6. Pine River Township, Gratiot County: 159

Pine River Township, which is along U.S. 127 near Alma, had 159 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 53% of all 301 vehicle accidents in the township.

7. Rochester Hills, Oakland County: 151

The city of Rochester Hills had 151 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018, which was 6% of all 2492 vehicle accidents in the city.

8. Grayling Township, Crawford County: 147

Grayling Township, which is along I-75 near Grayling, had 147 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 54% of all 270 vehicle accidents in the township.

9. Spring Arbor Township, Jackson County: 143

Spring Arbor Township, which is along M-60 in western Jackson County, had 143 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 50% of all 284 vehicle accidents in the township.

10. Breitung Township, Dickinson County: 140

Breitung Township, which is along U.S. Route 2 near the Upper Peninsula city of Iron Mountain, had 140 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 58% of all 240 vehicle accidents in the township.

11. Summit Township, Jackson County: 133

Meridian Township, which is along M-43 next to East Lansing, had 129 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 17% of all 777 vehicle accidents in the township.

15. Delta Township, Eaton County: 128

Delta Township, which is where I-69 merges with I-96  in metro Lansing, had 128 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 11% of all 1216 vehicle accidents in the township.

16. Verona Township, Huron County: 128

Verona Township, which adjoins the city of Bad Axe along M-53,  had 128 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 75% of all 170 vehicle accidents in the township.

17. DeWitt Township, Clinton County: 127

Dewitt Township, which is where I-69 intersects U.S. 127 in  metro Lansing, had 127 deer-vehicle accidents reported to police in 2018. That was 30% of all 427 vehicle accidents in the township.
