Woodbridge girls basketball stifles Irvine to capture Savanna Holiday Classic

Woodbridge’s girls basketball team cooled off Irvine with its defense Friday in the finals of the Savanna Holiday Classic.
The Warriors used a full-court man press to blank the Vaqueros in the first quarter and raced to a 49-26 victory at Savanna High.
Woodbridge (11-6), ranked 18th in Orange County, outscored Irvine 12-0 in the first quarter and opened a 32-11 advantage at halftime.
Irvine (11-5) reached the finals by upsetting No. 21 Northwood 50-47 in the semifinals.
Hana Watanabe and Maddie Yasui each scored 16 points to pace Woodbridge. Watanabe, a junior guard, earned tournament MVP while Yasui, a sophomore, sank four 3-pointers.
Forward Teagan Burrus added six points and nine rebounds for the Warriors.
Woodbridge and Irvine are in separate leagues this winter but will play a nonleague game Jan. 10.
The Warriors are part of the four-team Pacific Coast League with Sage Hill, Portola and Beckman. Irvine is a member of the Pacific Hills League with Northwood, University and Laguna Hills.
In the Christina Mauser Memorial Tournament:
Claremont 36, No. 10 Portola 21: The Bulldogs (14-4) were held to a season-low output in the championship game at Edison.
In the Whittier tournament:
Rosary 72, Los Osos 57 (OT): Mya Barnes made a layup with 18 seconds left in regulation to force overtime and the Royals (13-5) blanked the Grizzlies in the extra frame to claim their third tournament title of the season.
Allison Clarke scored 26 points, including six 3-pointers, to pace Rosary, which handed Los Osos (11-1) its first loss.
Barnes finished with 21 points while Ava Dominguez added 18, including three 3-pointers.
In the Titan Classic:
No. 7 Esperanza 58, Great Oak 30: Kaiya Mack earned tournament MVP honors at Temescal Canyon while Emma Wu and freshmen Madi Lam and Charlotte Muller made all-tournament.
In the Marina Larry Doyle Tournament of Champions:
No. 8 Brea Olinda 64, Huntington Beach 38: Mariah Henderson scored 15 points at Marina to lead the Ladycats (11-4) in the third-place game. Sarah Wang and Brooklyn Kame earned all-tournament honors for Brea Olinda, which fell to Marlborough 55-50 in the semifinals on Thursday.
Marlborough beat Desert Pines of Nevada 61-45 in the final Friday.

Mira Costa 45, No. 9 San Clemente 31: The Tritons fell in the final of the NCAA East Division in San Diego but placed Kiley Quillin on the all-tournament team.
No. 5 San Juan Hills 57, Mt. Miguel 53: Amanda Edwards earned all-tournament honors as the Stallions (16-2) took third in the WNBA Division in San Diego.
