Celtics unveil No. 6 court tribute to Bill Russell on TD Garden parquet 9/20/2022 Brian Robb,

The Boston Celtics announced they will pay tribute to the late Bill Russell during the upcoming season by painting his No. 6 in each of the free throw lanes on the parquet at TD Garden.

“The team has added the number 6 to both lanes to pay homage to Bill Russell’s dominant play in the paint, marking the first time numerical text will be displayed within that area on an NBA court,” the Celtics said in a statement.

This will be the first of several tributes to Russell for the upcoming season according to the team. Those will begin on opening night on October 18th in the season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers. The Celtics will also pay tribute to him with specialized uniforms honoring him and will also hold a tribute to him on what would have been his 89th birthday on Feb. 12.

All NBA courts around the league will also display a number 6 decal on the sideline near the scorer’s table, a tribute that was previously announced by the league this summer. The NBA will also retire the No. 6 jersey across the league in honor of the 11-time NBA champion who passed away on July 31 at age 88.
