LeBron James, Lakers slapped with harsh reality about Anthony Davis’ dismaying mentality

The Los Angeles Lakers with a huge win on Sunday night as they took down the Orlando Magic to keep themselves in the race for the few final Play-In spots out in the West. It required a monumental performance from Austin Reaves, who dropped a career-high 35-point performance as both Anthony Davis and D’Angelo Russell took a step back on the offensive end to let their young teammate take over.

This did not sit well with Chris Broussard. The outspoken analyst had a few things to say about Anthony Davis, in particular, not only about Sunday’s lackluster showing but also, about how the All-Star big man has refused to take the driver’s seat for the Lakers ever since LeBron James went down with a foot injury:

“AD is not a No. 1 guy. He’s the No. 1 talent, but he doesn’t have the mentality of a No. 1 guy,” Broussard argued. “That’s why he didn’t take the torch from LeBron James in 2020 after winning that championship, because he’s not that guy. … Guys have subpar games, but it’s that AD doesn’t cherish the moment. … There are a lot of guys that would be like, ‘Oh, he’s out for 3 weeks?’ It’s my time! I’m about to take over & lead us.'”

There’s no denying that Anthony Davis has had a handful of excellent performances amid LeBron’s injury absence, but for the most part, it seems that AD has been unwilling to take charge of the Lakers. Sunday’s pedestrian performance is a clear indication of this notion — at least according to Chris Broussard.

LeBron is still going to be out for a few more games for the Lakers as he continues to nurse a lingering foot injury. Davis still has time to prove his doubters wrong, but for his part, it is clear that Chris Broussard isn’t counting on it.
