San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich hilariously points out keys to success
Spurs coach Gregg Popovich, at media day in September 2019, said Monday he believes if Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today it would have saddened him to see the Capitol stormed.
As San Antonio Spurs fans know, head coach Gregg Popovich has jokes. He showed some of his humor prior to the game against the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday, November 18.
Popovich, who is closing in on Don Nelson's all-time record for most wins by an NBA coach, revealed his key to success when asked about his accomplished career.
"Key to success? Draft Tim Duncan," said Popovich, per Tom Osborn of the San Antonio Express-News. "After that, stay alive."
Joke aside, Popovich isn't wrong. The 72-year-old coach has had most of his success when Duncan was on the team, including all five of the Spurs championship wins. The Hall of Famer retired in 2016 after 19 seasons with the Spurs.
While the team hasn't had a championship since then, Popovich is keeping the Spurs spirit alive. He is nearing Nelson's tally of 1,335 with his 1,314 career wins. He could very well surpass him by the end of the season.
