The Philadelphia 76ers are trying to upgrade their roster surrounding superstar big man Joel Embiid to contend for an NBA championship. They will need to acquire a win-now player in order to get the job done in the playoffs.

One player who continues to be on their radar is Portland Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard who may want to force his way out of the Pacific Northwest sooner rather than later.

Philadelphia has a major trade asset: 25-year-old, three-time All-Star Ben Simmons. The Sixers have been taking trade calls on Simmons since their disappointing 2021 playoff exit. Per Derek Bodner of The Athletic, the Sixers do not necessarily want to move Simmons. Rather, their goal is to acquire Lillard.

Bodner writes:

Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey has always been steadfast in his pursuit of superstars, with his team-building philosophy being the epitome of “star hunting” long before the phrase was ever translated to Bostralian. From the very start of Morey’s tenure in Philadelphia the organization was almost singularly focused on monitoring the James Harden situation in Houston, according to sources both inside and out of the organization. Since the Sixers’ season ended the team has similarly kept a watchful eye on the status of Lillard in Portland. From the Sixers’ perspective, it would be fair to say the goal is less to trade Ben Simmons and more to acquire Damian Lillard.

If the Sixers can find a way to acquire Lillard, then the duo of him and Embiid would be almost unstoppable. Between Embiid’s dominance down low and Lillard being able to knock down long-range 3s while being a go-to guy down the stretch is something that could push Philadelphia over the top.

That is part of the reason the Sixers have been so shrewd with their free agency decisions. A lot of the contracts they have given out have been team friendly and are tradeable. If Daryl Morey has a chance to swing for the fences and acquire Lillard, then the Sixers will have the assets to get it done.
