GREENWOOD – Center Grove punched its tickets to the Johnson County championship game with a convincing 50-35 victory over Franklin on Friday night at Greenwood.

Both Center Grove and Franklin exhibited strong defenses to begin the game, with the two squads combining for only 13 first-quarter points. The second period was a different story for the Trojans, who were able to break open the Franklin zone defense with multiple 3-pointers.

“Getting the ball in the middle of that 1-3-1 zone, just getting the ball outside for our shooters to shoot,” said Center Grove’s Tayven Jackson when asked about breaking down Franklin’s zone. “That’s how it happens every game. Now we’re just moving forward.”

Toward the end of the half however, Franklin turned the tables on the Trojans and took advantage of their own defense. A buzzer-beating layup from Franklin’s Thomas Crow was enough to force Center Grove coach Zach Hahn to bellow “I just want to play some basketball!” for the whole gymnasium to hear. Hahn did not take kindly to his team’s defensive play to end the half.

“He was hot because we were turning the ball over when we weren’t supposed to,” Jackson said.

Hahn was also unhappy with how much clock  the Grizzly Cubs were running off in the quarter.

“He was kind of hot that they were holding the ball,” said Jackson on Hahn’s frustration. “I don’t really like playing in those kinds of games. I know our team doesn’t like playing in those games either.”

In the second half, the Trojans began to run away from Franklin in part thanks to Jackson’s driving ability in the fourth quarter.

“To this team, I bring driving and playmaking to the table. I just try and help my teammates by doing what I do, and it’ll open up the game for them too.”

Center Grove will face off against Greenwood on Saturday for the Johnson County Tournament title.

Indiana High School Basketball Highlights: Greenwood 60, Green Christian 41

Greenwood 60, Greenwood Christian 41: The host Woodmen started off hot and never looked back as they defeated the Cougars in the Johnson County tournament semifinals Friday.

Host Greenwood brought the energy early, spearheaded by a barrage of 3s from Brock Kincaid, Carter Campbell, and Noah Apgar. The sharpshooting helped Greenwood jump out to a 16-5 advantage at the end of the first period.

Greenwood Christian was able to cut the deficit to 11 points at halftime, but the Cougars were just unable to claw within single-digits. Thanks to the unmatched driving ability of Rasheed Elemikan, who finished the game tied for a team-leading 17 points, and the continued dead-eye shooting of Campbell (three second half 3-pointers), the Woodmen never looked back.
