Memphis Basketball Player Charged By Police After Punching Bowling Green Player In Handshake Line

The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team has advanced to the WNIT quarterfinals after defeating Memphis 73-60 on Thursday. 

Last night's game, though, will likely be remembered more so for what happened afterwards than during the contest itself.  

In the handshake line after the Falcons secured the victory, Memphis guard Jamirah Shutes appeared to punch BGSU's Elissa Brett in the face. Brett fell to the ground, where she remained for several minutes. 

According to the Sentinel-Tribune's J. Patrick Eaken, Bowling Green campus police waited for Shutes outside the locker room after the game. She's since been charged with assault. 

BGSU Athletics released a statement regarding the situation this afternoon. 

"Additionally, BGSU Athletics is conducting its own review. Violence is never acceptable and our priority remains the health, safety and support of our student-athlete, who is recovering and doing well. This is an active investigation in conjunction with the City of Bowling Green Prosecutor, and no further comment is available at this time," the statement read. 

Falcons head coach Robyn Fralick commended her team's ability to fight through adversity this season in a postgame press conference.

"My gosh, this group is resilient. To go through the last three weeks of the season we’ve had, which is just a gauntlet, to make the NCAA tournament we know is a big deal, and then to come up short of that — the way this team has regrouped and continued to compete and continued to love to play at the high level that they are doing is one of the coolest things you can experience as a coach," Fralick said. 

Bowling Green will look to advance to the WNIT Final Four with a win over Florida on Monday. Tip off is set for 6 p.m. ET.
