KALAMAZOO, MI - The holiday season is here, but before high school basketball teams across the state take some time off to celebrate, there is one final night of prep hoops action set to tip off Friday.

There are several interesting matchups in the Kalamazoo area, highlighted by unbeaten Kalamazoo Central making a trip down to Benton Harbor to face the undefeated Tigers and Mr. Basketball candidate Carlos "Scooby" Johnson.

Other key boys hoops contests include Otsego at South Haven in a key Wolverine North matchup, Three Rivers at Edwardsburg in a Wolverine South showdown and Parchment at Buchanan in a big BCS battle.

The girls side also features some noteworthy early-season matchups, including Three Rivers at Edwardsburg in a battle of the league's top two teams and Marcellus at Decatur in an early Southwest 10 showdown.

Follow along for a full Friday night schedule, plus the Player of the Week and helpful links from the early season.

Gull Lake's Caleb Taylor runs away with Player of the Week poll

Caleb Taylor might stand just 5-foot-9, but what the junior guard lacks in size, he makes up for with sheer athleticism.

After earning a third-place finish in the high jump last spring by clearing 6 feet, 5 inches, Taylor is translating those hops to the basketball court as the star point guard on an upstart Richland Gull Lake team.

Taylor opened his junior season with 16 points in a 75-70 loss to Otsego, then led his team again with 20 in last week's 81-72 victory over Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.

Those big games caught the eyes of high school basketball fans across the Kalamazoo area, helping Taylor run away with the top spot in the latest Player of the Week fan poll.

Taylor's 50,476 votes were good for 59.5 percent of the total and pulled away from runner-up Antonio Williams, of Parchment, who finished with 13,476 votes.
