Texas A&M-Corpus Christi announces Kathleen Rodriguez as new softball coach

Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi Director of Athletics Jon Palumbo announced Monday that Kathleen Rodriguez has been hired as the new head softball coach for the Islanders.

A coaching veteran, Rodriguez comes to the Island after five years as head coach at Trinity Valley Community College, which culminated in a Region XIV East tournament championship and NJCAA national tournament appearance in 2021. Rodriguez spent 10 seasons as the head coach at UTEP where she started the program and holds the program record for total wins and wins in a season.

"We had some very strong candidates for this," Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Athletic Director Jon Palumbo said. "Our new coach, she stood apart for a number of reasons. She has had great experience and a lot of success at all levels of college softball throughout her career. From Division III to Division II to the top level at Division I and most recently at the junior college level.

"She had to rebuild a program from the ground up and took them to a conference championship last season and a national junior college tournament appearance. You name it, she has done it as a head coach in college softball."

Kathleen and husband James Rodriguez were co-head coaches at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, N.M. from 2000-02, with Kathleen heading up the program during the 1998 season.  Prior to ENMU they started the softball program at Schreiner University in Kerrville, leading the Mountaineers to the regional tournament in the program's second season. Kathleen began her coaching career as an assistant at Trinity University in San Antonio in 1995.

"Competing for a conference championship has to be the goal," Rodriguez said. "That has to be what we're doing. To bring in the top athletes we can every single year. That will come by outworking our opponent."

A native of Santa Fe, N.M., Kathleen was a four-year starter for Saint Mary's University's national tournament team from 1991-94, playing catcher and third base. 

Kathleen and James have two sons, Ryan and Aryn and a daughter, Isabella.
