Breaking down how the commitment of cornerback Leonard Moore impacts the Notre Dame 2024 recruiting class and depth chart

Notre Dame added another talented player to its highly ranked 2024 class by picking up Round Rock (Texas) High School cornerback Leonard Moore. The 6-2, 175-pound cover man picked Notre Dame over offers from Oregon, TCU, Missouri, Kansas State, Duke, Arizona State, Arizona, Colorado, Washington State, California, Houston and Vanderbilt.

Let's take a look at what the pick up of Moore means to the Notre Dame 2024 class and the Irish depth chart.

Moore is the eighth player to commit to Notre Dame in the 2024 class, the third defensive player and the second cornerback, joining Cincinnati (Ohio) Moeller corner Karson Hobbs.

Notre Dame did well at cornerback in the 2021 recruiting class despite not being able to get on the road or host recruits due to Covid-19 rules. The Irish followed that up with back-to-back outstanding recruiting classes, landing Benjamin Morrison and Jaden Mickey in the 2022 class, followed by Christian Gray and Micah Bell in the 2023 class.

That put Notre Dame in position to only need two corners in the 2024 class. Position coach Mike Mickens could be patient if he wanted to, but the key was finding high upside cornerbacks. Notre Dame had an early board but outside of a small handful of players they weren't making much of a push, and they showed patience putting the board together fully. When the staff got back on the road it made Moore an immediate priority once he got his offer.

Landing Moore means Notre Dame has met its needs for the cornerback position from a numbers standpoint, and Moore gives the staff the kind of high impact player it desired. Now the Irish can focus on possibly adding a third cornerback who is a top of the board, elite prospect.

Moore is an extremely long and fluid cornerback. He moves with ease as a cornerback, shows excellent hip flexibility for such a long cornerback, and he shows an impressive burst. His closing speed and change of direction is top notch. In many ways he moves a lot like Notre Dame cornerback Cam Hart, but Moore is faster and more smooth than Hart was coming out of high school.

Despite being on the thin side, Moore is a more than willing tackler. He'll need to keep getting stronger, but he's a quality tackler, he goes low and he's willing to be physical when need be. As he gets stronger his ability to block destruct and tackle will be a significant positive. His upside, however, is built around his high upside as a cover player, both in man and zone coverage.

Moore has the tools to play either cornerback spot for Notre Dame. He has the range, tackling ability and ball skills to be a highly effective field cornerback. His feel in coverage, his speed and his instincts in coverage are also ideally suited for the boundary cornerback position. He's definitely an outside corner, but his ability to play either outside position is a huge plus for him in the Notre Dame depth chart.
