College GameDay on the line at Clemson? ESPN puts Syracuse on alert show could come for Notre Dame game

There could be a little more on the line for the Syracuse University football team in its undefeated showdown with No. 5 Clemson on Saturday.

ESPN has put Syracuse on alert it is under consideration to broadcast “College GameDay” on campus for next week’s game against Notre Dame, sources told Syracuse.com.

One source said Syracuse is one of the few schools the popular college football pregame show is considering, though a decision won’t be finalized until after Saturday’s slate of games.

A second source said Syracuse has put out a call to dome staff to beef up security on the Quad for “a high-profile” event that will lead right up to next Saturday’s kickoff with the Irish.

Kickoff is slated for either Noon or 3:30 p.m. The ACC announced Monday that ESPN is exercising a six-day hold on deciding the kickoff time and network designation for the Oct. 29 game against the Irish at the JMA Wireless Dome. The game will air on either ABC or ESPN.

If SU lands “GameDay,” it would mark the first time in the show’s history that it airs on the SU campus for football. The school is one of seven Power-Five schools that has not hosted the show made famous by analyst Lee Corso’s mascot-head game pick.

Other games that could be under consideration include Ohio State at Penn State, Oklahoma State at Kansas State and Cincinnati at UCF. ESPN has also occasionally taken the show to FCS schools.

An official announcement could come Saturday night or Sunday morning.
