Sports fans will get a chance to say goodbye to one of the greatest athletes Louisville ever produced, as the Louisville Sports Commission announced Wednesday the funeral for Paul Hornung will be available for streaming.

The service for “The Golden Boy” will be streamed live from St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church on Friday, Nov. 20 starting at 9:30 a.m. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only immediate family and close friends will attend in-person. Hornung, an NFL and college football Hall of Famer, died on Nov. 13 at age 84 after battling dementia.

Hornung was a three-sport athlete at the former Flaget High School before he won the Heisman Trophy as the University of Notre Dame’s quarterback in 1956. He went on to get drafted first overall by the Green Bay Packers in 1957 as a running back. Because of his ability to run, pass, block and kick, Hall of Fame coach Vince Lombardi called Hornung, “The most versatile man to ever play the game.”

If fans want to show their support, Hornung's family asked for donations for one of two local organizations in lieu of sending flowers. Fans can send donations to the Sister Visitor Center via Catholic Charities of Louisville (2911 South Fourth Street, Louisville, Ky., 40208), or the Norton Sports Health Athletics and Learning Complex via the Louisville Urban League (1535 West Broadway, Louisville, Ky., 40203).
